Here are the winners and honorable mention for our 2021 Sudden Fiction Contest!

First Place: Auteur Theory by Yasmeen Khan

Yasmeen Khan lives in Spring, Texas. Her work can be found or forthcoming in The Adroit Journal,
Columbia Journal, and The Rumpus, among others. She is the recipient of the 2020 Adroit Prize for
Prose, and her work has been recognized by the National YoungArts Foundation and the Alliance for
Young Artists and Writers.

Second Place: Pizza Talk by Gabrielle McAree

Gabrielle McAree is a writer from Fishers, IN. She studied Theatre and Writing at Long Island University Post. Her work appears in X-R-A-Y Literary Magazine, Reflex Press, Tiny Molecules, Versification, (mac)ro(mic), and elsewhere. She’s on Twitter @gmcaree_.

Third Place: Last Snowfall by Cora Ballek

Cora Ballek is a sophomore studying Environmental Policy and Music at UC Davis. In her free time, she writes prose and poetry, composes and records music, beatboxes, and builds with Lego. Her work has previously appeared in Open Ceilings and The Palouse Review.

Honorary Mention: The Drive to the Crematorium by Isabella Tong

Isabella Tong is currently a student at UC Berkeley studying political science and film. This is her first time writing fiction, but she has previously written for websites such as Taste of Cinema and other such publications. She hopes to continue writing in the future and thanks the BFR for this opportunity!
